Found Object: Banned Books Week 2014

Location: Department digital archives
Object: Photo of Professor Naomi Wood, 24 September 2014, reading from Shel Silverstein’s Falling Up for Banned Books Week 2014 (photo by Hannah Hunsinger for The Collegian)
Observations: 1) Next week (Sept 22-28, 2024) brings the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week — a week, as the ALA’s website explains, that “brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to read.” 2) The K-State English Department has participated in Banned Books Week for more than 25 years, hosting readings and panel sessions with colleagues across the university and the Manhattan community to advocate for this freedom to read. The photo above represents part of our programming for 2014, as Naomi Wood read from Shel Silverstein’s Falling Up in the Union courtyard. 3) This year, faculty, staff, and students from English, K-State Libraries, and other K-State programs will be reading from frequently banned and challenged books on Monday Sept 23 through Friday Sept 27, 12:30-1:30pm, in the second-floor “living room” at Hale Library. Join us there to celebrate the freedom to read!
