Location: Archive of department publicity materials for 2007-2008. Object: Flyer for the final class project in Don Hedrick’s ENGL 620 “Jacobean Drama” (Spring 2008): A full-cast performance of John Ford’s revenge tragedy Tis Pity She’s a Whore (c. 1630). Observation: Our faculty excel at creating memorable, ambitious, and engaging experiences for our students — and for those lucky enough to be in the audience.
As the program’s copy explains, students chose a performance model also used by the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA, drawing on Elizabethan and Jacobean theatrical practices.Students served in the roles of actors and dramaturges, attending to all aspects of the play’s performance and production….… including a logo design for use on the program, the tickets, and a cast t-shirt.One of the more challenging (and most sensational) props to secure for Ford’s bloody revenge play, a task made a bit easier by Behrend’s, a local meat plant: a heart on a dagger. Above, Giovanni (Michael Wieser) presents the heart of his sister Annabella to Florio (Adam Irving) and the assembled group.Soranzo (Bill Gepford)The Friar Bonaventura (Kyle Myers) offers solace to Giovanni (Michael Wieser).Annabella (Megan Deppner) with her Tut’ress, Putana (Randi Drake)Vasquez (Russell Keck), servant to Soranzo, wields a sword.Though Spring 2019 may not bring more revenge tragedy to the English Department end-of-semester stage, we will have a range of final class projects in the weeks ahead, including presentations by students in Tom Sarmiento’s ENGL 680 “Midwestern Literature” on May 9, Shirley Tung’s ENGL 362 “British Survey II” on May 13, and Don Hedrick’s ENGL 610 “The Renaissance Imagination” on May 8.
