Found Object: Mock Caldecott Favorites 2019

Location: Department digital archives
Object: Photo from the Mock Caldecott held 7 Dec. 2019
Observations: 1) This photo captures some of the undergraduate and graduate students who participated in the Mock Caldecott in December 2019, an annual event sponsored by the Department and one of our student organizations, the Children’s and Adolescent Literature Community, with support from Manhattan Public Library.  2) Now in its 18th year, the Mock Caldecott offers us an opportunity to introduce students, faculty, staff, and community members some of the best picture books published during the calendar year and select our own Caldecott winner and honor books in advance of the American Library Association’s selection. 3) Taken in December 2019, this photo also documents the last pre-Covid Mock Caldecott we hosted: soon after, we would all add virtual events to our professional and personal lives in response to the pandemic. 4) The books featured in the photo represent favorite books from our long list of titles that year, highlighting one of the pleasures of the event: the discovery of a title or author or illustrator to enjoy in the months and years ahead. 5) There’s still time to join us for this year’s Mock Caldecott on Saturday December 6! Explore and vote on the long list of titles by Friday December 5, and then gather at Manhattan Public Library or on Zoom at 2pm CT to discuss the short-listed titles and select our winning book of 2025. Happy reading!
