To get us ready for a semester of metrical fun, my ENGL 463 “Introduction to Poetry” students got do everyone’s favorite thing: watch a professor laugh at their own jokes on a PowerPoint.
But then they got to do everyone’s actual favorite thing and make a meme from their lesson.
The rules for the assignment were very simple: make a meme about a craft element from the PowerPoint. However, I also strongly suggested that they try to make one about the craft element they struggled with the most or had the hardest time defining on their own. This approach would accomplish two things: 1) It would make clear to me as the teacher where they might need extra information or support, and 2) It would hopefully help them have a slightly better understanding of the craft element if they had to work with that challenging idea and translate it into meme form.
I also provided a link to a meme generator in case they’d never made one before and made an example myself.
Here are some of the wonderful memes made by students. If this is the kind of creativity and humor they’re bringing to week 1, I can’t wait to see what the rest of spring semester brings.
